These jars have really caught my eye! And they seemed to have caught the eye of several others too. I pinned them on Pinterest and lately I’ve noticed that a lot of people have been re-pinning my pin, which was a re-pin since I didn’t pin it originally {right?}. So when debating on what to post today, I couldn’t ignore the overwhelming interest in this pin {are you following this?}: how to make these jars with decorative lids. I figured I’d give it a try. They looked very cool, seemed very cheap and very easy. Works for me!

This project uses glass jars from your fridge or pantry. I used a pickle jar and a roasted red pepper jar. The metal lids are ugly so here’s a little diy to make them look like show pieces you’ll want to put out on display.

SUPPLIES:
1 glass jar with metal lid {spaghetti sauce and pickle jars work great}.
1 plastic bottle cap {the cap must be shorter than the height of the screw. Caps from soda bottles and some water bottles work well}.
1 cabinet knob {vintage glass knobs can be found in fleas markets, antique stores, and thrift shops. I got mine at Target – 4 for $19.49}
1 screw {if the cabinet knob doesn’t come with a screw, bring your knob to your local hardware store, so you can try some on for size}.

PROJECT STEPS:
1. Clean a glass jar and remove the label. If you’re using a pickle jar like I did, use a little lemon juice to remove the smell.
2. Sand the metal lid to remove the graphics. Do your sanding over some scrap paper to catch the dust and make cleanup easy. I tried 2 options – on one, I left a little paint on the lid to give it a rustic, distressed look. For a sleeker look, I sanded the other one and sprayed the lid with a coat of metallic spray paint – good for all surfaces.
3. Drill a hole through the center of the metal lid using your smallest drill bit. The smaller your drill bit, the easier it’ll be to drill. You’ll risk tearing the lid if you start off with a large drill bit. Switch out the bit with larger sizes and continue drilling until the hole is big enough to accommodate the screw.
4. Drill a hole through the center of the plastic bottle cap that’s large enough to accommodate the screw.
5. Now put everything together. Insert the screw through the plastic bottle cap and then through the bottom of the lid. Then with the screwdriver, screw in the knob on top of the lid. Ensure a tight fit.
Put the metal lid back on the jar and now you have a beautiful place for your odds and ends such as hair accessories, cupcake holders, or snacks like nuts, candies and cookies. The original pin was from Relevé Design.
