DIY team logo artwork

Happy Friday everyone!! Spring has sprung and to me that means baseball. I love it. Growing up and living in the Boston area, I’m a big Red Sox fan. I remember my family listening to the games on the radio during the summers out at the pool. And there’s nothing better that going to Fenway Park to see a Red Sox game. My oldest son plays for his high school team now too and I could watch those games all day.

So I’m extra excited about this project today where you can paint your favorite team’s logo onto a canvas. boo yah! It’s a great addition to a playroom or a child’s sports-themed bedroom, or it makes a great gift for any die-hard sports fan.

Even though I painted a Red Sox logo, this technique could be used for ANY image you want to paint. A cute butterfly, a flower, an initial – which is so trendy right now – and yes, even a Yankees logo. Here are the steps for creating your own team logo artwork (or any image!):

First, collect your materials. I bought this 8 x 8″ canvas at Michael’s but you can use any size canvas you want. You’ll also need acrylic paint, paint brushes and a pencil. Then find an image you want to paint. For me it was a simplified version of the Red Sox logo. I found it online and printed it out at the size I needed (about 6 x 6″).

Next, tape your printout onto a window (during the day time!) with the image facing out and trace the outline of your image with a pencil onto the back of the paper.

After all your lines are traced on the back of the paper, flip the paper over and place it onto your canvas where you want it to go. Make sure the paper is right reading now and the pencil lines are on the back. Then, with your pencil, rub all the areas on the front of the paper where the pencil lines were traced, transferring the pencil from the back of the paper onto the canvas.

The lines will be faint and serve as a good guide for painting!

Now it’s time to paint your creation! Using your acrylic paints, fill in the areas as indicated on your printout. I like to paint the sides of the canvas too but you can leave them blank – or even add a different color here for a little variation and frame-like look.

When you’re done painting, let it dry completely and lightly erase any pencil lines remaining.

Now you have your custom team artwork that you can hang proudly! This technique works great for any type of image and it makes a great birthday party activity. If the kids are too young, you could do the tracing part and let them have fun painting! My boys are too old to appreciate this project anymore but my daughter is asking to do a Boston Bruins one next! Go B’s!
