Today I’m sharing my weekly progress on our bedroom makeover. It’s week 3 in the One Room Challenge™ and I did a little bit of shopping.
Even though I bought a few things for this room, I really didn’t want to spend a lot of money. Sometimes when you set limits on your design it forces you to find more creative and unique solutions. And I think I got some great stuff.
One thing I noticed when taking these pictures is that I need a solution to hide the ugly bed frame. I don’t love bed skirts but it needs something. Adding it to my list.
My purchases include:
A new bed spread.
I found this tufted all-white duvet cover on clearance at Pier 1 Imports. I *love* an all-white bed but I have been very hesitant to have one because I thought it would get so dingy. And it may. But I’ve asked a few people with kids – and a dog – and they say it holds up fine. I’ll probably be washing it a few extra times but our kids are older and our dog is a yellow lab so hopefully it will stay nice and white. hopefully.
A wood plank & metal bench.
I had been looking for something to replace our two orange ottomans at the foot of our bed. HomeGoods had this on sale and was exactly the look I was going for. The ottomans were nice but a little too wide for the space and I didn’t love the color in this room. I might use them in our closet but that’s a whole-nother project.
I found this beauty at HomeGoods – a high-quality piece for a great value. I love how this adds some subtle color and texture and will come in handy for those chilly nights.
A patterned rug.
We’d love to replace our wall to wall carpeting but this is a nice solution to cover and distract from that for now. It’s another HomeGoods purchase that I couldn’t pass up. I love that it brings in grays and isn’t trying to be too matchy. Is that a word? I put it on an angle to try to be a little more unexpected and interesting.
pillows.
I heart pillows. And these big, beige, textured pillows are from – guess where? yes, HomeGoods. One had a slight rip on the seam so they gave me both of them for 20% off. score. I love their big presence. The ruffles give them a feminine touch but the fabric is a little more rustic. I found the bolster pillow at HomeGoods too. Texture and a little bit of pom-pom whimsy.
I’ve been debating on what to do for bedside tables. I really didn’t want to buy new ones so I decided to refinish two mis-matched bedside tables we already had. One was in this room and the other was in storage. I love the idea of mis-matched bedside tables but they need to work well together. One trick I use when trying to use mis-matched pieces is to keep most of the elements similar but with enough differences so it doesn’t look like you’re trying to match them. For example, both tables have that boxy shape, are the same height and have one or more drawers. I’ll be painting them both bright white and replacing the drawer pulls to match. I like that one has an open space for some pretty storage too. Check back next week to see them finished and pretty!
That’s it for this week. And here’s my updated to-do list:
- DIY headboard – adding a solution to cover the ugly bedframe
- rethink furniture – desperately want new end tables (almost done!)
curtainslinens- wall art –
gallery wall done, still need art for additional wall spaces rug(s)- task lighting
add some plants– probably need a few smaller ones- accessories and additional storage
- upgrade our white painter grade doors?
There will be a few DIY projects next week so don’t miss it! Thanks for following along. Click here to check out all the other fun One Room Challenge™ projects too. Enjoy!

Hi Lori!
I found your blog while uploading my own ORC link. I’m really enjoying how unique your room looks. It has a kind of cozy timelessness to it. I’m in the same boat of not wanting to spend too much money on this project, but I do have to say: I think the investments you’ve made in these new textural pieces are well worth it!
