It’s all in the details!
Here’s a super easy do-it-yourself project that may seem like a small detail – but it can add a lot to a room. Light switch and plug outlets are often overlooked but covering them in decorative papers can make these little gems shine. I bought expensive, hand-made metal outlet & light switch covers when we first moved in. They’re beautiful, but when I go around and add up what I spent, ugh. So when doing the home office makeover, I thought I’d try a different approach. So I covered the light switches and most of the plug outlet covers with coordinating decorative papers. Then I decided to cover all of my light switch and plug outlets in our finished basement {12 total!}. It beats trying to hide them and small details like these do make a difference. Here are the project details:
Materials:
light switch/outlet covers – use your existing ones, if you have
decorative paper – stick with thinner paper versus card stock so it forms to the plastic cover better
3M Super Adhesive Spray
Decopage glue
Small paint brush
Xacto knife
Cut the decorative paper so that you leave about 0.625″ extra on all sides of the light switch/outlet cover {enough to wrap around to the inside}.
Spray the paper with the 3M Adhesive. Make sure you’re in a well ventilated area and put scrap paper underneath – the spray is potent. Lay the switch/outlet over face down on the paper and cut a notch out of each of the corners so that the sides can wrap easily and don’t overlap each other.
Fold all edges over. Use the Xacto knife to cut out the openings for the light switch/plug outlets.
Turn switch/outlet cover over and smooth out. Paint on one coat of decopage glue and let dry. Use the tip of the Xacto knife to punch a small hole where the screws go in.
When completely dry, attach to wall.
Easy peasy! I hope you enjoy your weekend!
