I had a (big) birthday the other day and it made me reflect a bit. Getting older definitely has it’s frustrations, but I find that getting older also means being in tune with who we are and what we like. We’re more comfortable in our own (wrinkled) skin and less afraid to be ourselves. So today I’m sharing a few of my favorite things. Some may be a bit petty but they make my everyday a little more enjoyable – and more me. I hope you enjoy them and click on the links if you want to find out more.
Watching a good TV series. I’m loving Schitt’s Creek right now. It’s a combination of funny, quirky, and compassionate. You’ll love the characters. Check it out – especially Season 3, episode 9 – awesome.
Books – I’m not an avid reader. I’d rather watch TV or go to the movies. And at 50, I’m finally ok admitting that. People have shamed me for not reading enough and some even say I’m not challenging my imagination or developing my vocabulary if I’m not reading more. But they don’t know my imagination, or what a lexiphanicism I am 😉
Don’t get me wrong, I do read. Just not as much as I watch Schitt’s Creek. Here are a few of my favorites: Becoming by Michelle Obama. I recommend this on Audiobook – she narrates it and her voice is perfect. And Girl, Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis. Oh the empowerment! A Case of Need, by Michael Crichton (1968) which he wrote under a pen name, is fantastic.
I love me some good lip glosses. Click here to read my post about my slight addiction – and recommendations. But recently, NYX butter gloss is my fave. And Créme Brulee is my color choice. Yummy.
Weathers Originals Chewy Caramels – I carry a bag of these around in my pocketbook (I told you I was getting old), and they are the perfect pick-me-up. My friend called them liquid butter and she’s partly right. They’re liquid butter AND liquid sugar combined. Again, yummy. But even though they’re candy, just one (or two) usually keeps me from splurging on an even bigger treat.
Panera Bread’s Green Passion Smoothie – It’s made up of peach and mango purees, white grape and passionfruit, blended with fresh spinach and ice. And it’s only 200 calories.
These high waisted flair jeans from American Eagle. I’m so tired of skinny jeans. I have a million pairs but I just wanted something a little different. And these are. I even tuck my shirts in when I wear them. I don’t think I’ve done that in 20 years. They’re fun.
Animal print everything: this Cherry Leopard Print Blouse from Old Navy, these Faux Snakeskin Booties by Tom’s, this faux snakeskin leather pouch from Michael Kors – all fun yet understated ways to wear these patterns.
Pink in home decor – Our first home had mauve kitchen countertops. Mauve. I hated them and tried everything to distract from them. So it’s funny now that I’m incorporating a little dusty pink (mauve’s trendy cousin) into our home. I just bought these bedside tables – the soft pink is a little unexpected and pretty.
NARS Tinted Moisturizer – is amazing. I don’t usually splurge on make-up but, again, getting old, so I asked the sales woman at Ulta for a good, sheer foundation. She tried a few on me and I fell in love with this one. It was nice having someone else aid in my color selection too. Try it – and try asking for advice.
Have a wonderful day and I hope you enjoy some of my favorite things!
