To be honest, I had to look up the definition of ombré because I really wasn’t sure what it meant. I was seeing ombré everything – I just didn’t know that’s what it was called. So when I saw what it meant, it all made sense. The word ombré is relatively new. In French, it means shaded or shadow, but in decor, it means having colors or tones that gradually shade into each other from light to dark. It’s not a new concept – historically, it refers to a method of dyeing fabric. But now we see it in everything from hair {ie. Jared Leto at the Oscars, or Drew Barrymore, below}, clothing, nails, artwork, cake design, and party decor.
I’m a little torn on ombré hair but I love the trend for designing, decorating and clothing. The monochromatic colors are a nice alternative to the standard of mixing and matching colors and patterns.
Here are some examples of my favorite ombré products and executions:
Ombre in fashion: button down chambray shirt, anthropologie $88 | layered ombré necklace, Forever 21 $6.80 | Tom’s Dip-Dyed Crochet Skip-ons, Nordstroms $58.85 | nails | infinity ombré scarf, Target $14.99 | clutch purse, Etsy $55
An ombré color scheme works so nice for a party and helps with the problem of trying to match all the color decorations. And topping it all off with an ombré cake is picture perfect. ombré cake toppers, Etsy $45 | ombre wrapping paper, Paper Source $5.95 | cake| tassel garland, Etsy $30
Ombré options for the home are endless… pillows, curtains, flowers, artwork, or even pick the gradual color scheme as a palette for a whole room. Floral arrangement and votive candles from Martha Stewart | artwork, Etsy from $16 | faux fur ombre pillow cover, Pottery Barn $39.50
I saw this ombré faux chandelier diy project on a blog post at heygorg.com. It looks so cool and easy to do. I love the idea of hanging things from the ceiling that don’t require any electrical expertise. Click here to check it out. Be on the lookout for other ombré trends too and I’d love to hear what you find! I think it’s a fresh take on color for this spring. Enjoy!
