Baths are such a luxury. Most of us don’t have the time to take a relaxing, luxurious bath. But then there’s my daughter. She would take a bath everyday, probably more than one, if I let her. And they’re not the get-yourself-clean kind a bath. She takes relaxing, soothing baths. And I’m jealous. But she’s only ten, so I don’t think she needs to unwind, she just loves them. And she has all the bath accessories a girl could need. A spa tray, a spa towel, a head rest, and all different bubbles and bath salts. And these bath accessories aren’t cheap. So when I discovered that making bath salts was so easy to do, I decided to give it a try and share my concoction with you. Even though I had my 10 year old in mind for this project, I think this is such a beautiful homemade gift for anyone.
I used essential oils for this project. I’m hearing a lot about these products lately and I’m learning a lot about them. If you’re not familiar with essential oils, they’re a concentrated liquid containing the “essence of” a plant’s fragrance. They’re used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, along with flavoring food and drinks, and for adding scents to household cleaning products. Essential oils also claim to have medicinal features. They’re popular for soothing stress, improving mood, restful sleep, enhancing skin, and general wellbeing. I found this grapefruit essential oil at Whole Foods and they had several scents to choose from. They are also widely available online. They can be expensive {$9.99 for a 15ml jar} but because they are concentrated, a little bit goes a long way!
I chose to combine two of my favorite scents – lavender and grapefruit. Grapefruit has a fresh, fruity and clean scent and it’s slightly energizing. Where lavender is very relaxing and soothing and I could just smell it all day.
Here’s what you’ll need for these amazing smelling and soothing bath salts:
- 1 cup Epsom Salts
- Dried Lavender
- Grapefruit Essential Oil
- Hinged Lid Glass Jar – I found mine Michael’s for $1.29 each. They’re a great size for these bath salts and make the perfect container for gift giving.
After I pulled the lavender off the stems, I placed about 2 teaspoons in a food processor and mixed it with 1 cup of Epsom Salts for just a few seconds. The lavender breaks up into tiny pieces and the salt stays intact.
Then, I added about 4 drops of grapefruit essential oil to the salts and stirred. At first the oil may want to clump together but if you stir this for a few minutes, the fragrance will mix nicely.
I added some more lavender that was not broken up in the food processor because I love the way it looks. And I put it all in the adorable hinged jar. I think these hinged jars really make these bath salts look so pretty. They’re the perfect size and style. My daughter will love these and I will definitely be gifting them! Nothing beats a homemade gift, especially one that smells so amazing!
Have a great weekend – enjoy some quiet time, maybe you can even get a chance to use these bath salts.
