Decorating for Valentine’s Day….hmmmm. Do I bother? What do I do? Hang up a lot of hearts and buy flowers? Or make something? Well, I know there’s one Valentine’s treat I put out every year – the Sweetheart conservation heart candies. We gobble them up and we love reading the sayings. So I thought I’d do something else with these iconic, colorful candies and came up with creating a Sweetheart candy garland. It’s easy, cheap and fun. Plus you get to snack while you create! Here’s a little history: Sweethearts were first created in 1901 and are made by the New England Confectionery Company, or Necco. I’ve driven by that candy factory so many times! And a sign of the times: the sayings now include things like “txt me” and “#love” and “LOL”. Cute and yummy!
Here’s what you need: ribbon of your choice {mine is pale pink 3/8″ wide} cut to any length {I made mine 60″ long}; Sweetheart candies {I used 36 candies}; glue gun.
1. cut your ribbon to any length you like.
2. hot glue each heart onto the ribbon so that the fun sayings show. I placed the hearts about 1-1/2″ apart. Continue until the whole ribbon is filled. I left a little extra ribbon at each end. Don’t forget to eat a few of the hearts along the way!
3. Now it’s ready to hang! Have fun with it. You can drape it from the edges of a shelf, cabinet knobs, or a light fixture. I hung mine from a fun decorative deer head that needed an embellishment. But I also liked it hanging from our liquor cabinet knobs – I might need to make another one!
Enjoy! XOXO
