I made this monogram pillow with pom poms and I wanted to share it with you not just because it’s super sweet but also because it took me less than 2 hours to do it. I love quick, clever projects – and if you can find an inexpensive pillow, it’s a cheap one too.
MATERIALS
pillow – I got a cream colored one on sale at Michael’s and it has a nice burlap-like texture to it.
yarn – I bought yarn at Michael’s too – I wanted to keep with a neutral palette so I used this one called stone washed.
fabric pen – you could use fabric paint too but I found the pen was perfect for outlining the monogram and filling it in.
pom pom maker – there are many ways to make pom poms, but this tool makes it super easy and keeps them all the same size and shape. I included a YouTube video on how to make pom poms below.
scissors, X-acto knife, needle, thread, computer to print out monogram template.
STEP ONE
Make a monogram template by printing out your letter on the computer as an outline. My pillow is 15″ square so I made my monogram letter about 5″ wide x 7″ high. This proportion seemed good to me but feel free to make yours larger or smaller. With scissors or an X-acto knife, cut out the letter.
STEP TWO
Position your template in the center of the pillow and trace the edges with your fabric pen. Then, if you have a letter with cut outs, like my g, it’s best to cut out those sections and trace around the outside of those so that if your pen slips, it will be on the inside of the letter where you’ll be coloring it in. Once the entire letter is outlined, use the fabric pen to fill in the letter. You can use fabric paint here instead of the pen if you want your color to be more dense. I liked the textured, almost gray coloring from the fabric pen.
STEP THREE
After you admire your lettering skills, you’ll need to make 4 pom poms. I bought the Clover pom pom maker last year and love it. I’ve made lots of pom poms for things like winter hats, Christmas decorations and a fun garland for my daughter’s room. I’m also thinking of making some pom poms to add to the edge of a blanket. Endless pom pom ideas…
Here’s the YouTube video on how to use this tool and make your pom poms. Believe me, it’s super easy and once you do one, you’ll breeze through the rest.
STEP FOUR
Once your pom poms are done, take your needle and matching thread and stitch through the center of the pom and sew one onto each corner of the pillow. Be generous with your stitches so the pom pom is secure.
For about $20 and a few hours, you end up with this personalized, super cute pillow.
And it might be a little early to think about Christmas but this would make a great gift. I’ll remind you later!
