DIY faux fur wreath

This faux fur wreath is one of my favorite posts and I love hanging it up each year for the holidays. I wanted to share it with you again in case you missed it and want to make your own chic, cozy wreath. I used my grandmother’s broaches for decoration so this piece is extra special to me.

I love this wreath too because, in addition to being a pretty holiday decoration, it can be left up all winter so I don’t have to take it down right after the holidays.

Faux fur is such a hot trend and the bright white is so crisp and snow-like. I love the simplicity of this wreath with just the little bit of bling.

Here’s what you need to make your own faux fur wreath:

• Foam wreath ring – I found mine at Michaels
• 1/4 yard faux white fur – this can be purchased at any fabric supply store, the piece should be about 6″ larger than your foam wreath ring
• Decorative element – this could be an initial, an ornament, a pin, ribbon or a faux flower
• Glue gun
• Scissors

We’ll need to wrap the fabric around the wreath form. Normally, I would cut the material into strips and wrap it around. But wanted the fur to have a clean look and I didn’t want to see the edges of the fur on the front of the wreath. So I did a less traditional way of attaching the fur to make it look a little smoother. This technique makes the back look a little messy but the front looks nice and flat.

First, I laid the fabric out with the fur side down and cut the corners off the fur. Place the foam ring on top of the fabric – front side down too. The fabric is about 6″ larger than the wreath form.

I cut a circle out of the center of the fabric a few inches smaller than the wreath. Then I cut slits from the circle to the edges of the wreath.

I wrapped the outside edges of the fur around to the inside and glued in place as I worked around the form. I made sure to overlap the material tightly and carefully so that it wasn’t too bulky on the outside.

Then, I wrapped the strips from the inside of the ring and attached them in place with the glue gun. There were spots that were bare and I just used some patches of the fur to cover them up before I wrapped each inside strip.

Now add your decorative element. This can be a faux flower, an ornament –  like the silver initial I found at Target, or even just a simple ribbon.

I ended up using 2 of my grandmother’s broaches and stacked them on top of each other to make them really stand out. I just love these pins but I also love having something of hers to look at during this time of year.

I just attached the broaches to the wreath with their pins.

I added a pretty silk ribbon and it was ready to hang. The fur adds a cozy feel to the room.

You could also lean it on a shelf or on top of a piece of furniture.

I used some extra fur to give this stag a shawl. If only I could make one for myself.
