Our daughter just recently turned 13. As part of her birthday present, she wanted to makeover her room. I was so excited – I love room makeovers and doing it with her would be so fun. But I also love her room. I put a lot of thought and time into designing her room and I am a little sad to see that change. I guess it’s a little symbolic. She’s growing up and changes are inevitable. Even though it’s just her room, I know it’s her way of expressing her independence and growing up. And I know more changes are coming.
I was so excited when I originally designed her room. It was my first little girls room to design. But I knew right away our little girl was not super girly. I knew to include pink – but sparingly. So I stuck with greens and blues with pink accents. I painted wide, ombre horizontal stripes on the walls, added a pink crystal chandelier with table lamps to match. I painted a Pottery Barn knock-off canvas that hangs over her bed. And her curtains. oh her curtains. Pink dupioni silk panels hung with short rods so they frame the windows. And custom-made roman shades with pretty green and white polkadots. It’s all so pretty.
Here’s the before pictures:
Oh, that pretty ombre wall… and the bedding…
The pink crystal chandelier and the curtains – all being updated.
I loved redesigning her closet last year and I don’t think too much updating will be needed here. A few new storage solutions, some updated artwork, and replacing the pink band at the bottom of the curtains.
She has definitely outgrown a lot of this. So she and I picked out some new colors, an overall style, and ideas for wall hangings, furniture, curtains, bedding and decorative items. But we’re trying to do it on a strict budget. I don’t want to just buy all new things. We’re trying to repurpose a lot of items, shop the house for others, DIY some projects, and then buy what’s really needed.
It’s going to be a fun project and I’ll share the finished room when we’re done, along with the sources, ideas and all the DIYs. I can’t wait!!
Until then, here’s our design inspiration board:
And here’s a few things we’ll be doing:
- wall color – She wants gray but I’m fighting to keep the green ombre stripes because the walls are so pretty, and the color is really versatile. Plus the walls are in great shape and repainting them will add a lot more time to this job that we just don’t have right now.
- color palette – charcoal gray, white, navy and rose gold.
- artwork – we saw the llama pic at HomeGoods a few weeks ago and fell in love. This will be a really cute focal piece. We also need to try and reuse as much of the current artwork she has.
- seating – she wants more, but her room isn’t huge so we’ll have to be creative. I love the lounge bean bag chairs.
- gallery wall – she has a photo wall with pink frames. She wants to keep the photos so we’ll need to make these work with her new color palette…
- curtains – good bye silk dupioni, and now we’re in search of something new and just as pretty.
- furniture – she doesn’t love her green and wood furniture and it is a little big for her room but I can’t justify buying all new stuff. We may need to shop the house, or update what she has.
- Last year I redesigned her closet so we’ll be updating some small pieces in there but I’m so glad the wallpaper we used will work with the new color palette.
- And accessories – the fun part… lots of artwork, storage pieces and accent decor.
Stay tuned for the new look – and some inexpensive ideas on how to change the look or color palette in any room. And of course, some great DIY projects!
