The weather seems to be changing overnight, and fall is definitely in the air! Today I wanted to share a simple homemade stovetop air freshener that’s the perfect way to bring the great scents and smells of the season into our homes.
This stovetop air freshener is easy to make and you probably have most of the ingredients already in your home. Simply put a pot of water on the stove, add your ingredients, a few drops of essential oils, if desired, and let the scents and goodness fill your home. I like to put a pot on to simmer when guests will be coming because it’s so nice to walk into a home that smells good. You can package up these goodies and give them as gifts to neighbors, teachers, and friends. And I’ve made some fun labels you can add to the bags to make them look pretty and provide clear instructions.
Essential oils are a great way to find balance during this season when the fluctuating temperatures can effect your energy and immune system. And the fruity, citrus scents help boost energy and mood – and they remind me of fall. But this air freshener works well even without the added oils.
Supplies needed:
- 1 quart water (more or less depending on pot size)
- Cinnamon sticks
- Dried cranberries
- Dried granny smith apples
- Dried orange peel (I couldn’t find these in stores so I made my own – see instructions below)
- Granulated orange peel
- Citrus essential oils: orange, lemon or tangerine (approx. 10 drops)
Kitchen Tools Used to Make the Homemade Stovetop Air Freshener:
- Saucepan
- Parchment paper
- Cookie sheet
Instructions:
Place everything into a saucepan and cover with water. Add a few drops of oils and turn heat on to medium-high. Let the water simmer up to several hours to make house smell nice. Add more water and essential oils as the water evaporates.
How to dry orange peels:
Pre-heat oven to 150-200 degrees. The lower heat is ideal but some oven’s lowest setting is 200 degrees. If your oven is set at 200, crack the door a bit to vent. Place orange peels on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Let them cook for approximately 2 hours, flipping them every 30 minutes. Time may vary, depending on heat setting. Be sure to check the orange peels periodically. They’ll be done when they curl and harden slightly. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely.
I like to package up these goodies and give them as gifts to neighbors, teachers, and friends. And I’ve made some fun labels you can add to the bags to make them look pretty and provide clear instructions.
